Last Wednesday, September 21, I had the great honor and pleasure to present my newest book ‘Overal Opa’s en Oma’s’ (Grampies and Grannies Everywhere) to our acting governor, Mrs. Ella Tromp-Yarzagaray.
Mrs. Tromp-Yarzagaray has been following my writing career since I started out in 2003 with my first publication, the children’s poetry collection, ‘Rima Rond Di Aruba’ (Rhymes Around Aruba). At that time she was the Minister Plenipotentiary of Aruba in The Netherlands, an Aruban lady I, and so many, admired for her knowledge, presence and charisma. I’m so glad I found that special moment, presenting my first book to her at the Arubahuis (Representative Office of Aruba in The Hague), in one of my photo albums. How time flies... I’ve got to start digitalizing these memories! (and put on some polka dots for a change ;p)
The book presentation would’ve been complete with the presence of co-author and publisher Jeroen Hoogerwerf and illustrator Mariëlla van de Beek with whom I had the greatest pleasure of working these past months. But we’ll have to share many treasured moments between the three of us, until we’re reunited again for another Children’s Book Festival in Aruba. Or, for a brand new project for The Netherlands (hint!)
For all of you who are wondering what it’s like, an audience with Her Excellency inside the royal chambers of Oranjestad, I can share the following: my entrance was a little uneasy (I’m clumsy when it comes to protocols and etiquette), the governor’s secretary Sharaima de Cuba was a perfect hostess, the coffee was great, the homemade cookies were delicious, and the company... Excellence! Thank you Mrs. Ella Tromp-Yarzagaray for your time, and for the interest and enthusiasm you’ve always shown regarding my work, and the work of so many local artists contributing to our cultural development.
